Here's what John Matthews, SFTJF Treasurer,
had to say about the evening:

"It was about 24 hours ago that my wife, daughter, and I were at Nicks (Nicks Rockaway Beach, 100 Rockaway Beach, Pacifica, Tel: 650-359-3900) for the SFTJF Board and Staff Jazz Band Jam Session.

To net it out -- we had a great evening in a nice place with SFTJF Directors and Staff, friends, and a large number of Trad Jazz fans listening to wonderfully played familiar Trad Jazz tunes. We had a wonderful evening.

The band was as announced:

  • Bob Schulz – cornet
  • Bill Carter – clarinet
  • Marty Eggers – piano
  • Scott Anthony – banjo
  • Bill Reinhart - string bass & tuba
  • plus Virginia Tichenor - drums.
  • And -- Pat Yankee sang a couple of songs in two of the three sets.

(Of course, we were disappointed that Leon Oakley and Clint Baker could not play due to prior engagement obligations.)

Scott Anthony was the one who suggested that we try Nicks as a place to hold this Jam Session. Nicks has a restaurant, lounge, bar, dance floor, and band stand, all of which are attractive and reasonably spacious. It is about 20-25 minutes from San Francisco and easy to get to from the S. F. Peninsula, AND they have plenty of FREE parking. Nick’s’ manager was happy to have a band, for which he did not have to pay, fill his lounge and bar on an otherwise slow Monday evening.  (My vote goes to Nicks for future Trad Jazz gigs.)

Note:  My wife said it better than I.  Her summary goes along these lines:

"Over the hill and at the end of the earth to the surge of the breaking waves, we did not fall off.  Instead, we were all surprised to be in the atmosphere just like the olden days when Trad Jazz gigs were held in "digs" like this."

Jack and Jan Browne brought Charles and Glenna Campbell and were at the lounge table next to Bill Tooley and me. Of course, Charles had to go out to the dance floor and cut a few jigs. As he came back from one of them, he jabbed my arm and said; "Yesterday, I celebrated my 95th birthday." I am impressed with his dance capabilities, and especially at his age of 95.

(I do not know the total collected, but we passed around a basket asking the Trad Jazz fans assembled for tips for the band.  It was almost full by the end of the evening.)  We did get two-thirds of a page of new e-mail addresses of people interested in getting notices of future Trad Jazz gigs.

And to the assembled band members -- thank you so much.  Thank you for the wonderful evening. The many Trad Jazz fans enjoyed the Trad Jazz tunes and the dancing environment your created for us. Actually,  I think the band enjoyed playing for such a responsive group of Trad Jazz fans.

It was great fun.

I cannot wait for our August 2, 2001 Jam Session.
