From The July Newsletter
From the July, 2001 issue of Since Bob Helm, the legendary San Francisco reedman, is celebrating his 87th birthday as the Guest Star of STJS on July 8, we thought that it might be appropriate to feature the the Website of the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation in this month's article. In 1940, 12-year-old Jim Goggin became interested in Classic, West Coast Jazz. He began collecting records and other memorabilia. By 1981 when he founded the non-profit corporation, the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation, he had tens of thousands of programs, pix, records, letters clippings, sheet music, manuscripts, posters, etc relating to the West Coast jazz revival which had begun in San Francisco in approximately 1937- 38. An appraiser for Butterfield & Butterfield said that his collection was one of the world's largest of its kind. Through the years the SFTJF has continued to collect and archive material from the West Coast Traditional Jazz Revival, including material from bands who continue to play within the genre today. In 1989, Goggin resigned as president. Bill Carter took over and still holds that position today. Their current activities include archival preservation, supporting live events and broadcasts, collaboration with other jazz and educational institutions, and developing new products and media applications. Although the SFTJF lacks the funding to open its archive to the general public right now, other means are being found to make its resources available. For example, historic recordings and documents are being made available to radio stations. Consumer products such as posters, books, tapes and CD's are available to the general public. The Foundation also helps to foster live, high quality traditional jazz, regionally as well as worldwide.
