From the Frisco Cricket article Yerba Buena Tuba by Hal Smith, Summer 1998
Mike Bezin (1909-1970)
Mike Bezin Though he is a native Chicagoan, Bezin has immersed himself in the traditions of San Francisco Jazz, also playing cornet and trombone in addition to tuba. Like Mark Vehrencamp and Ray Cadd, Bezin has not only studied the classic San Francisco records; he has heard the second-generation tubaists in live performance. Bezin's West End Jazz Band is basically a San Francisco style group and he has played all three brass instruments in it, as the occasion demands. He has also played the Dick Lammi style to perfection on several recordings by the Down Home Jazz Band.29 Like Bob Short, Bezin is able to switch embouchures without warming up. Once, during a Frisco Syncopators concert, Bezin spelled Bill Carrolll at the tuba, moving so smoothly from cornet to tuba that the leader did not notice the transition.30
