From the Frisco Cricket article Yerba Buena Tuba by Hal Smith, Summer 1998
Bill Carroll (1934-)
Bill Carroll In the liner notes of a German CD reissue of Turk Murphy's Jazz Band, Bill Carroll1 is accurately noted as "Perhaps one of the best tuba players in America, particularly on the hard-to-play large 'Yerba Buena Tuba.'"21 He heard Bob Short and Dick Lammi with Turk Murphy in the early '50s and studied with Short. Carroll played bass with the El Dorado Jazz Band and tuba with the Original Inferior Jazz Band and with Pat Yankee and the Sinners in the '50s. He joined the Turk Murphy band in 1965 and stayed, except for four years, until Murphy's death in 1987. During his stint with the band, Bill Carrolll participated in many recording sessions, all of which illustrate his incomparable beat and choice of bass notes.22 Since the late '80s, he has played and recorded with Bob Schulz's Frisco Jazz Band, the Frisco Sycnopators, Down Home Jazz Band, Jelly Roll Jazz Band and the Minstrels Of Annie Street.23 Carroll has been a tremendous influence on several younger tubaists-particularly Ray Cadd.
