From the Frisco Cricket article Yerba Buena Tuba by Hal Smith, Summer 1998
Gene Mayl (1928-)
Gene Mayl organized the Dixieland Rhythm Kings in Dayton, Ohio in the late '40s. The DRK once trekked to El Cerrito, California to hear the Yerba Buena Jazz Band in person and all the young musicians were permitted to sit in. Later, Mayl temporarily moved to the Bay Area and a job with Bob Scobey. While in Northern California, Mayl heard and got to know Dick Lammi, Squire Girsback and Bob Short. However, Gene Mayl came up with his own style on tuba and string bass with the Dixieland Rhythm Kings on numerous San Francisco-style recording sessions during the '50s.20 Eventually, Mayl returned to Dayton to concentrate on the DRK, which he still leads, though he no longer plays tuba.
