Bob Rann (1935-)

Bob Rann (1936-) joined the Salty Dogs at Purdue University in the early '50s. His influences were Dick Lammi, Bob Short and Gene Mayl. Rann's earliest recording²⁵ shows him paying homage to the other tubaists, but also illustrates an aggressive beat and a melodic sense which is unique. Subsequently Rann played with Turk Murphy's Jazz Band, then joined the South Frisco Jazz Band in the mid-'60s. He has recorded extensively with the SFJB and the recordings clearly illustrate why Rann has been classed as one of the premier tubaists in traditional jazz.²⁶ Since the early '70s he has also played in Southern California with the Back Bay Jazz Band and the Frisco Syncopators and recently with the Titanic Jazz Band .
