From the Frisco Cricket article Yerba Buena Tuba by Hal Smith, Summer 1998

Bob Rann (1935-)

Bob Rann (1936-) joined the Salty Dogs at Purdue University in the early '50s. His influences were Dick Lammi, Bob Short and Gene Mayl. Rann's earliest recording25 shows him paying homage to the other tubaists, but also illustrates an aggressive beat and a melodic sense which is unique. Subsequently Rann played with Turk Murphy's Jazz Band, then joined the South Frisco Jazz Band in the mid-'60s. He has recorded extensively with the SFJB and the recordings clearly illustrate why Rann has been classed as one of the premier tubaists in traditional jazz.26 Since the early '70s he has also played in Southern California with the Back Bay Jazz Band and the Frisco Syncopators and recently with the Titanic Jazz Band .
